Towards the middle of Serangoon Road stands this imposing temple dedicated to Kali, Hindu goddess and destroyer of evil. It was believed that Indian pioneers, who came to live and work here, erected a shrine dedicated to the Hindu goddess on this site as early as 1855. A temple was then built by them in 1881. Daily prayer ceremonies called pooja that visitors can view (Photography is allowed, as long as visitors are respectful and do not disturb worshippers). The gopuram (pagoda) which is a common element in South Indian temple architecture, was built at a height so that it can be seen from a distance.
